Through the York Region Character initiative we have committed ourselves to creating a work environment which fosters and demonstrates good character through our daily dialogue, discussions, actions, and interaction with employees, clients, customers, suppliers, service providers, and anyone else with whom we conduct business.
The 11 character traits we focus on are:

FAIRNESS: I will treat others in a just, equitable and unbiased manner.
Working with Fairness means:
- Listening and be open to everyone's ideas and suggestions
- Being consistent in the way I speak to and treat all employees, colleagues and customers
- Being careful in making judgments about others
- Treating other people equitably and fair in all your dealings with them
Practical Suggestions for working with Fairness:
- I will make decisions that are just and without bias
- I will work in accordance with the rules and policies of Cardinal
- I will not take sides in a dispute between two co-workers or make exceptions to the rules for my friends
- I will understand and demonstrate the difference between equal and equitable

COURAGE: I will stand up for my beliefs and principles and face challenges, fear and difficulty with fortitude.
Working with Courage means:
- Continuing to do what I know to be right even when it would be easier to follow another path
- Ensuring that my feelings of "I can" are stronger than my feelings of "I cannot"
- Taking risks to do the right thing, even when it might challenge the beliefs and behaviours of others
Practical Suggestions for working with Courage:
- I will express my opinion and/or point of view in meetings
- I will seek clarification on issues or tasks when necessary
- I will no hesitate to suggest ideas that would benefit Cardinal even if they are not shared with others
- I will not be bullied for a point of view or for a course of action in which I do no believe
