Audubon Certification

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program created by the United States Golf Association and Audubon International, is an award winning education and certification program helping golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of golf. Celebrating its 20th year in 2011, the ACSP is the most widely used environmental certification program for golf courses. After an evaluation, Cardinal Golf Club now meets ACSP Certification Criteria in all five management categories, these include:

Audubon International

Audubon International works with companies to deliver high-quality environmental education and facilitate the sustainable management of land, water, wildlife and other natural resources in all places where people live, work and play. Cardinal Golf Club became an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2013; this program is an award winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect our environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. By helping people enhance the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf course operations, the program serves as vital resource for golf courses.

IPM Council of Canada

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a process that uses all necessary techniques to suppress pests effectively, economically and in an environmentally sound manner. IPM involves planning and managing ecosystems to prevent organisms from becoming pests. This requires identifying potential pest problems through monitoring and recording weather and pest population levels and establishing thresholds to make treatment decisions to reduce pest populations to acceptable levels. Cardinal has a  Level 2 Accreditation with IPM Council of Canada (which is the highest accreditation you can have).

Ministry of the Environment

Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has been protecting Ontario’s environment for over 40 years. Using stringent regulations, targeted enforcement and a variety of innovative programs and initiatives, the ministry continues to address environmental issues that have local, regional and/or global effects.

Cardinal Golf Club continues to work closely with the MOE regulations on a daily basis. We require permits to take water to irrigate the golf courses. These permits help to ensure the conservation, protection, management and sustainable use of Ontario’s water. The amount of water used to irrigate is recorded daily, which becomes part of a report that Cardinal submits to the MOE annually.

Cardinal Golf Club also carefully follows Ontario’s MOE regulations for pesticide use in conjunction with IPM. This includes an annual report on the use of pesticides as well as public meeting that Cardinal hosts annually.

Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA)

LSRCA’s mission is to provide leadership in the restoration and protection of the environmental health and quality of Lake Simcoe and its watershed. All of the creeks/streams that flow through Cardinal Golf Club empty into Lake Simcoe. Cardinal tests all water coming onto and exiting from the property to ensure no pesticides leech into the water. We have been conducting tests since 2011, and all have tested negative for pesticides. We have also adapted no cut and no spray zones within 15 meters from our creeks to ensure the quality of the water leaving the course is just as clean as the water that enters the course.

Water Conservation at Cardinal Golf Club

All of our irrigation pumps are equipped with flow meters and daily flow readings are documented daily.  This information is reviewed annually to determine if our water usage can be further reduced.  Changes in weather conditions from year to year make consistent reductions difficult to attain.  In 2013 our water usage was (91,224,362 L) half of what we used in 2012 (181,992,749 L) due primarily to high rain fall amounts in June and early July.  Our pumps are serviced and upgraded annually to ensure they are performing efficiently.
